Creeping Bentgrass

Creeping bentgrass is primarity used on golf greens. It recuperates quickly and has high shoot density, making is very adaptable for low mowing. Creeping bentgrass can also be used in mixtures to produce a very dense lawn.

Colonial Bentgrass

Agrostis capillaris L.

Colonial bentgrass is used extensively on golf greens in mixtures with red fescue for low input purposes. It tolerates close mowing very well. The shoot density is high and it is very adaptable to numerous growth conditions.

Use with red fescue for low input. High density and adaptable to numerous growth conditions.

Velvet bentgrass

Agrostis canina

Velvet bentgrass is noted for its fine texture and high shoot density which forms a unique velveteen turf surface. In general, velvet bentgrass has better drought tolerance compared to other bentgrasses, and is popular with golf course superintendants for use on putting greens. In addition, it is suitable for cutting as sod, and is also used for home lawns. Velvet bentgrass is well adapted to the northeast and northwest and performs well in poorer soils. It has good cold tolerance and demonstrates better shade tolerance than other species of bentgrass.
